Here Are The Major Headlines From Nigerian Newspapers For Wednesday, 10th April 2019
1. 2019 budget: Saraki gives Senate committee deadline to submit report
Senate President Bukola Saraki on Tuesday gave the Senate Appropriation Committee until Thursday to submit its report on the 2019 budget.
Speaking on the floor of the chambers, Saraki said the budget report must be presented on Thursday, April 11, ahead of the April 16 approval of the money bill.
2. Senate confirms chairman, board members of NEDC
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Maj.-Gen. Paul Tarfa (rtd.) as Chairman of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
The Red Chamber also confirmed the appointment of Mohammed Alkali as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC alongside nine members.
3. Rivers elections: PDP blackmailing Supreme Court judges – APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trying to blackmail Supreme Court Justices into doing their bidding in respect of the matter of the exclusion of Rivers State APC candidates from the last elections.
The APC in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, was reacting to the PDP’s allegation that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi and other party bigwigs were prevailing on the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Mohammed, to reverse the judgement which stopped APC from fielding candidates for the 2019 general elections, especially in Rivers State.
4. Senate passes Nigerian Police trust fund bill
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, 9th April, passed the Nigerian Police Trust Fund Bill (HB 1583).
Recall that last week, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, had promised the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, that the Senate would fast-track its work on both the Police Trust Fund Bill and the Police Reform Bill.
5. ASUP threatens to resume strike
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has threatened to embark on a one-week national strike as the Federal Government allegedly refused to implement the agreement it reached with the union recently.
This is coming less than two months after the Union called for a suspension of its two-months old strike in order to review MoU with the Federal Government, Naija News reports.
6. Police dismiss nine senior officers, demote six
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) on Tuesday dismissed nine (9) senior officers and demoted six (6) for misconduct and unprofessional attitudes.
In a statement by the spokesperson of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Ikechukwu Ani, the dismissal was part of the outcome of the fifth plenary meeting of the commission, which held in Abuja on March 26 and 27, 2019, presided over by its Chairman, IGP Musiliu Smith (Rtd).
7. Senator Olujimi speaks on defecting from PDP
The Senator representing Ekiti South constituency, Biodun Olujimi, has revealed that she will not leave the Peoples Democratic Party because of her personal principles and values as a politician.
The Senate Minority Leader also stated that PDP has a certain liveliness that can not be seen in other political parties in Nigeria.
8. ICPC Chairman says executive arm more corrupt than other arms of government
Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mr. Bolaji Owasanoye has submitted that the executive arm of government in Nigeria is more corrupt than the legislative and judicial arms.
The ICPC boss made the declaration while delivering a lecture tagged “The legislature and fight against graft and corruption” at the orientation session for new legislators in Abuja.
9. Ninth Senate: Kalu insists APC should zone deputy senate presidency to south east
The position of the deputy senate president should be zoned to the South East region of the country according to a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu.
Kalu, a senator-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, maintained that this will guarantee interest of equity and fair play.
10. Why National Assembly should probe Buhari’s administration – PDP
The National Assembly has been called on to probe the borrowing spree of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
The call was made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who opined that the National Assembly should probe the terms of the borrowing and the handling of the funds.
